African Lion
Africa's prideful cats
Lions are the only cats that live in groups, called prides. Despite common belief, females are actually the pride’s leader and primary hunters. A lion pride can consist of anywhere from two to 40 lions total.
Male lions will help to defend the territory, roaring to warn intruders to stay out. A lion’s roars that can be heard from up to five males away.
Lions can live in a variety of habitats, including open woodland and grass savannas as well as dry forests, coastal scrub and semi-desert areas. The vast majority live in Africa south of the Sahara, with a small population in India. Although lions are iconic, few realize that these big cats have undergone a dramatic range reduction with only about 20,000 lions remaining.
